On more than one occasion I've been critical of Jerome Iginla's failure to step up enough for Canada at the World Hockey Championship held every spring. I just never bought into his reasoning, while at the same time watched a battered and bruised Ryan Smyth never say NO to the call of his country. Plus I understand both players were always disappointed in the way their respective NHL seasons had come to a crashing conclusion. But it was just disappointing, as a fan, to not see Jerome with the Canadian Maple Leaf on his jersey in the spring. HOWEVER, I do have to tip my helmet to Jerome for giving this year's All Star game a pass as he wants to spend the break being close to his ailing Grandmother. I always believe in family first. Always. 100% the right call on this one Iggy.
Topic TWO:
I'm amazed at how quickly some Edmonton hockey fans have started wringing their hands in glee at the speed of Edmonton City Council on the Downtown Arena issue. I wouldn't get 'too excited' as this is far from over. While I applaud the Council for moving forward on some of the early issues, there is MAJOR work to be done on the funding portion of this thing. It's forward progress and it's refreshing to see, but please don't get too cocky. Lots of work to be done... lots.
Topic THREE:
NOT sports but irritating me beyond belief. The City of Edmonton is warning drivers to get their cars off the main roads so that they can effectively plow the streets. If you don't- they'll ticket your vehicle and/or tow it. Here's my question: Because they've done such a crappy job of plowing the alleys, how are most people supposed to get their cars off the main roads and into their garages? Just asking.
For my ONE reader in Kenya... SNOW is what happens when the upper atmosphere is so freakin' cold that rain falls and by the time it gets to the ground it's a fluffy white frozen flake. A few flakes are pretty. TEN non stop days of snow is NOT pretty.
While I applaud the NHL trying to do SOMETHING to make the AllStar game better and more compelling for the fans, but perhaps they messed up. Let's face it, nobody really cheers for the West against the East do they? So why not simply dump all the sticks at Centre Ice just before the start of the game and then have the Captains pick sticks out of the pile? Worked well for me and my buddies on a snow covered 117th Street and 49th Avenue as a kid. However some of us started to memorize who played with what sticks- YA, I cheated. Took me 36 years to admit it, but I feel better now.

Topic TWO:
The NFLPA is suing the NFL for collusion? Yup, that's got to make you feel more confident that there will NOT be a lockout next fall. Just kidding. "It's more litigation. I've said before: This is not going to get resolved through litigation," NFL Commish Roger Goodell said, according to the NFL Network. "It will get resolved through negotiation. It's time to get to the table and negotiate." We'll see what happens. This could be a messy year for both sides.
Had an enjoyable day off on Monday. Caught up on some house stuff (boring), shovelled some snow (again), finished reading Andre Agassi's book (great read) and surfed the web a little (fun).

The most fascinating part was watching Edmonton City Council debate the new, proposed arena issue on the internet. My gut reaction to all this? It's simply TOO convoluted and there's really no design or funding structure in place to get most Edmontonians remotely excited about spending their tax dollars. However, late Monday afternoon Edmonton City Council did decide to slowly edge forward and enter into negotiations with the Katz Group.

BUT here's the deal for ME. Get me some more information on HOW and WHO is paying for this and as a taxpayer I'll take a look at it. But until that happens- I'll PASS thank you. For now.

Topic TWO:
Didn't mention this in my last blog but... I'm happy that the Patroits are out of the NFL playoffs. In my opinion, the best thing that can ever happen to any sports league is to see new teams and new faces advance in the post season. It just freshens it up. But I'm looking forward to Green Bay taking on Chicago for the NFC title while in the AFC it's the Jets facing Pittsburgh. Both match ups very intriquing to me. My picks coming on Friday. Could you imagine the TV ratings if the Chicago Cubbies ever got to a World Series? OK- bad example.
Topic THREE:
I think I may be one of the few people that actually enjoyed Maggie the Monkey's Stanley Cup playoff selections on TSN. It just added an element of levity to the often too serious world of sports. But how about this story from Agence France Presse- Paul the octopus, who shot to fame during the football World Cup last year for his flawless record in predicting the outcome of games, will get a shrine to mark three months since he died, his aquarium said Monday. "There will be a six foot high statue of Paul, on top of a football, in the middle of which will be a see-through window with the golden urn containing Paul's ashes," spokeswoman Tanja Munzig told AFP. Funny, but really? Topic TWO:
Ah... the pleasure of watching a young and somewhat inexperienced hockey club. Oilers played a smart, savy game on Friday beating the Sharks in San Jose and then followed it up on Saturday with a totally brain dead performance against the Kings in Los Angeles. The perfect juxaposition on their year thus far... a Delta Faucet season in my opinion... HOT and COLD. Fans should expect more of the same the rest of the season. But there is progression, frustrating progression.
Topic THREE:
Maybe it's just me, but I'm shocked at the coverage the Continental Cup of Curling received in both Edmonton newspapers. Many followers of curling that I know exhibited little or no interest in this manufactured event at all. Add to that the fact that North America was SO far ahead on Saturday that it made Sunday's match ups totally pointless. Call me when the Brier starts- then I care.
Thank goodness for Jim Cornelison in Chicago. After a horrible Hollywood entertainer's attempt at Oh Canada and the US anthem prior to the Oilers/Kings in LA, we were treated to the best in the business before the start of the Bears/Seahawks mismatch. THAT guy is the best in the business.
So here we are at the halfway point of the NHL season and the Oilers record this year is pretty much the same as last year, if not just a few games worse. So why the optimistic feeling in the Big E? I could spend all night looking up stats, but this is a blog and I like giving my honest, blunt and sudden fan-like responses. I think the feeling is better in Edmonton simply because the team appears to be more competitive and hanging in more games than last year. Using Dallas on Tuesday night as a measuring stick- normally they suck in the Big D. But while they still lost, they probably played their most competitive game in Dallas in years. Plus they've lost a mitt full of one goal games with fewer blow out losses. That's has helped as the fans just seem to want to hang on to every positive this season... and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Is there?
Topic TWO:
For the past seven years the backbone of the Calgary Flames has been their little netminder named Kipper. On numerous occasions against the Oilers he found a thousand ways to steal win after win, night after night. Plus he also played a huge role in their run to the Cup Final in 2004. But now Coach Brent Sutter appears to be pointing his finger at Kiprusoff, telling him he needs to be better. Granted he surrendered four goals on eight shots against Carolina the other night and got the hook. BUT how long can Kipper hang on in Calgary? Surely he's taken stock of the situation and probably realizes he's going nowhere with this team. Hey Brent?! It ain't him... it's the crappy team in front of him. Talk to your older brother about that.
We'll be yelling and screaming at the TV and would love to have you join us. I have Pittsburgh, Chicago, Green Bay and New England this weekend. Who you got?
Lots of chatter lately about the possibility of TSN adding a sports radio network to the list of their growing properties. Would only make sense since they have the people already in place to make it work. Simply take your TV on-air talent and work them a little more doing various radio shows. Afterall, it's worked quite well for many years in the US with ESPN Radio. According to an article by Bruce Dowbiggin of the Globe this week, it's suggested that rather than try what CHUM did in 2001 with an national network, TSN may focus more on the Toronto market plus take on the FAN 590. Smart move. Personally, having been part of the failed TEAM Network in Edmonton, it became quite obvious to all after 18 months that local was the way to go. If TSN does this right, it could work to perfection on many fronts.

Topic TWO:
IF this TSN thing were to happen... the timing of this couldn't be better for the Edmonton Oilers... I'm just not sure they know it. With the local Oilers radio rights up for grabs at the conclusion of this season, wouldn't it be astute to purchase a local station and flip it to all sports and then team up with TSN Radio? Run all your product (NHL, WHL and Minor League Baseball) during prime time and repeat it overnight to give your sponsors a double shot. Then fill the key time slots with good local programming and use the TSN National Radio shows to fill the gaps. Then hit the streets and sell the crap out of it combining radio, board and scoreboard signage etc to drive local advertising dollars. You could push the brand 24/7. Wow. Pretty powerful. All hypothetical of course.

Topic THREE:
Rogers Sportsnet didn't waste any time. With all the rumbles and rumours of TSN considering a jump into the radio biz, they jumped first. Both the FAN 590 in Toronto and FAN 960 in Calgary flipped this afternoon to Sportsnet Radio FAN stations. So it begins. Stay tuned.

Topic BONUS:
How could ALL of this affect the current local sports radio stations across the country? Well, the new Rogers arrangement or even the rumoured TSN radio network could do a couple of things. It could either drive the local guys higher or absolutely pull them under, unable to compete with a new player(s) with deep pockets. All depends on how the current station reacts to the changing radio landscape. Those who freeze in fear may die a quick and messy death, while those who embrace opportunity could be greatly rewarded.
I work with some great people and one of those people had the pleasure(?) of visiting Seattle this past weekend for the New Orleans/Seahawks playoff game. Only one problem... she's a huge Saints fan. In many Canadian cities this wouldn't be too much of a problem. Sure there would be some fun loving taunts- but all taken in stride. In Seattle many of the fans were very good and had a blast taking playful pokes at the visitors from New Orleans (although visiting from Edmonton). But there's always a few idiots and Seattle has it's share apparently. Tell me if this isn't over the line? "Hey Saints fan, go back to your Katrina"! Ouch. Sometimes don't you wish the idiots did everyone a favour and just shut their pieholes? Have some playful banter, show your support for your team but also show some class.
Topic TWO:
Just watching the Stars and Oilers on Tuesday night in Dallas. Kind of sad to see how this once proud rivary has sharply declined. First off, where the hell is everyone? Bet you the building was maybe half full. Sad. Secondly, maybe if the Oilers could find a way to win once in a blue moon in the Big D it might help crank up the competitive juices. Can't blame the fans for not going to watch- it could get a tad boring to watch your team kick the other guy's ass every time. Maybe it's going to take some time to get that old 'magic' back? I certainly hope so... it used to be so much fun.
As I expected from the very start of all the drama back in December, the Edmonton Indy is back! Octane Motorsport Events will hold the Indy car event on the July 22-24 weekend at the City Centre Airport after inking a three-year deal with the Indy Racing League. I never believed that this thing was in jeopardy- ever. All politics from the City and the Octane folks as far as I was concerned. So anyway... Welcome back... it's now up to the fans to show up.
I decided at the end of 2010 to start having some fun with this blog and to deliver something Monday through Friday that would be of interest to me... hoping that it would also be of interest to you too. I'm in Canada, so hockey would obviously be the number one topic for me, but because I love other sports, I decided not to limit myself to only hocker sports for that matter. Your comments to me privately over the past week have been nothing short of exciting and many of you have told me to keep it short and keep have some fun. That is what I will do.

Topic TWO:
I'm not overly worried about how many pageviews I get each day or week, just more fascinated in where you are located on the planet. So far I've had views from Canada, USA, United Kingdom, Russia, Germany, Finland, Sweden, South Korea, Greece, India and United Arab Emirates. Can I ask you two quick questions? Are you a misplaced Canadian, or just interested in what someone on the other side of the World has to say? Love to hear your comments and THANKS for reading!!
Ali/Frazier... Domi/Probert... Lohan/Rehab... all great battles! As painful as this is for me... congrats to the Seattle Seahawks for their improbable upset victory over the Saints on Saturday. It's not that I don't LIKE the Seahawks, but many of my friends that love the team are so damn annoying. LOL. Same deal for many of my friends that cheer for the Green team in the CFL. You guys just make it so damn difficult for me to cheer for you and your team. If you'd only turn down the ANNOY button just a little and I'd be with ya 100%. As for this 'silencing the critics'? It's gonna take more than one magical win to do that.
This one is gonna be real quick. How much longer can Andy Reid go before getting the axe in Philly? Just axing.

Topic BONUS:
The fact Sidney Crosby doesn't know when he suffered his 'mild' concussion, tells me that he clearly has a 'mild' concussion. Are you kidding me? It's obvious Sid! You got blindsided by Washington Capitals forward Dave Steckel during the NHL Winter Classic. The other hit by Victor Hedman of the Lightning on Wednesday just firmly established it. Heard a story once that many people sustain slight concussions and never even know it. If you're playing Rec hockey and get knocked into 'loopy-land', do yourself a favour and get checked out by your doctor.
It drives me absolutely nuts and I hate the word. It is THE most over used word in all of sports- CHOKE. This team choked, that team choked, what a choke, did you see those guys choke? Everyone has their own definition of the word CHOKE and here's mine. If a team that is 'substantially' more talented, loses, in dramatic fashion, to a team that is 'noticeably' weaker in talent... that qualifies as a choke to me. Therefore, I do NOT consider Canada's loss to Russia as a choke. In my opinion... both teams were equal in talent, both teams were not really expected to get to the Gold Medal game and one team dominated two periods while the other took control in the third period. Fair and square win for Russia. Not a choke.

Topic TWO:
If you really want my opinion of the Ultimate Choke Job? Look no further than April 1982 and the Miracle on Manchester (one of the very few LA Kings high moments I might add). The Oilers gassed a 5-0 lead only to lose in overtime 6-5 to Mario Lessard and the Kings. Here's why this one truly is a CHOKE. The Oil finished the season 48 points better than Los Angeles and the two teams weren't even comparable in talent. It shouldn't have even been close. But if you check out 'my' definition of a choke above and you'll see why this one truly qualifies. It was beyond belief.

Topic THREE:
I caught the Oilers and Islanders at Rexall on Thursday night. It was almost like watching two teams in 28th and 29th place in the overall standings. Best line I've heard in awhile "I went to a 50/50 draw and a hockey game broke out". Kinda sums it up. BTW- the 50/50 was $27,000!

Topic BONUS:
Not that he's gonna be on poor street any time soon but Tiger Woods has lost a couple more endorsement deals. Both Golf Digest and Gillette have decided not renewed their deals with Woods. So that's brings the number to five that have dropped Tiger since his 'episode'- Accenture, AT&T and Gatorade being the others. We'll see what happens if he ever starts winning again.

One last thing!?
The NFL Playoffs start up this weekend... I'll be hosting at The Playbook Lounge at Northlands Park on both Saturday and Sunday... C'mon down and enjoy! Should be great!Bryn Mighty Mouthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06200365705736931671noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1627239622504329492.post-71216555794549299632011-01-05T20:56:00.001-07:002011-01-06T08:45:49.359-07:00Da... that one hurts!Topic ONE:
I gotta say that it's been a long time since I've been THAT disappointed in a hockey loss. Canada gassing a 3-0 second period lead and losing to the Russians 5-3 in the Gold medal game was simply stunning and devastating. But that's junior hockey- things can turn at the drop of a hat. I still can't figure out who and when the hat dropped. Congrats to the Russians.

Topic TWO:
Pierre Mcguire could have sounded a little less bitter after the game. But at least he sucked it up enough to give Russia a little credit for showing a ton of heart and desire in the third period. We in Canada often think that we're the only ones capable of showing guts and determination. We do NOT have the market cornered on these things. There's a lot of great hockey players on this planet- which is fantastic for the future of the sport!

Topic THREE:
John Elway mastered many a spectacular comeback for the Denver Broncos, but this one might take some work. Elway is a classy guy (who I've met and he's as nice as they come) and now he takes over as the Broncos executive vice-president of football operations while chief operating officer Joe Ellis becomes team president. Happiest guy on the planet? Tim Tebow. Just a guess on my part, but imagine being able to wander down the hall for a pep talk from a Hall of Famer?

Topic BONUS:
Thanks to my friends Rod Pedersen and Mitchell Blair in Regina for adding my blog to their Blog Favourites. Same deal for Guy Flaming and Dean Millard in Edmonton. Cheers fellas!Bryn Mighty Mouthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06200365705736931671noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1627239622504329492.post-48368738295136432662011-01-04T21:48:00.000-07:002011-01-04T21:48:14.536-07:00Stanley Cup Champion Canucks?Topic ONE:
Caught the Canucks/Sharks game on Monday night... an absolute dandy! With the win the Canucks have now won six in a row and take over top spot in the Western Conference. However, I'm more amused by the lack of crowing from the Wet Coast about the possibility of the Canucks being a favourite to win the Stanley Cup. Burned too often I suppose. But they're 25-8-5... clearly the class of the West so far and would be one of my early picks to win it all. I know... I know... It's almost creepy for me to say it let alone think it.

Topic TWO:
It would be so easy to pick New England and Atlanta to make it to the Super Bowl, but based on the way the past NFL season went, I'm not sure who's going to make it to the big game this year. Ironically, this is the first season in ten where I haven't been involved in a pool of some sort- and maybe that's a good thing. It just seemed like this year you really never knew what was coming from one week to the next. That is why I'm so pumped up about the playoffs.

Topic THREE:
The Seattle Seahawks. It's a tad embarrassing they're even in the playoffs with their sub 500 record, let alone the fact they have home field advantage this weekend over the Saints. But they're now IN and who knows what they'll do with a fresh start. You can bet one thing... I'm guessing NFL HQ would like them bounced quickly to avoid further embarrassment.

Topic BONUS:
Could someone please take Brett Favre's cell phone away.
Team Canada... not favoured to win the gold, not even sure they'd get to the gold medal game this year... those were the comments of many a learned hockey observer. Whoops. Just goes to prove that in a one game event it's damn hard to beat the Canadian heart and passion. They deserved their 4-1 win over the USA and now it's Russia for all the marbles on Wednesday night.

Topic TWO:
It would be far too easy to dump on Buffalo for their total failure to support their young American junior team against Canada. The rink was packed- but 75% of the crowd were Canadians. But two quick things... Canada is actually closer to the rink than some suburban areas of Buffalo AND they simply don't care about this event the same way Canada does. Doesn't mean Buffalo is an awful hockey town... they aren't.

Topic THREE:
Kills me to admit this. But Dallas Stars have an absolute gem in American junior netminder Jack Campbell. He's going to be a great NHLer and worse, will be a thorn in Canada's side for many Olympics to come. Damn.

Topic BONUS:
Good to hear the initial reports on Jordan Eberle's ankle. NOT broken, just very sore with an MRI to come. May only miss a few games. Good news for the Oilers.
Just a quick note to Oilers fans who're 'already' starting to get cocky. YES, they're rebuilding and YES, things appear to be far better long term than down in Calgary... but please be warned. The road to re-building is not a freeway (it will take time) and there are plenty of off ramps (one bad decision can screw it ALL up). I realize that you've gone through some tough times since the 2006 miracle run to the Final and you want to get some of that swagger back, but be careful about cranking up the arrogance too soon. Many a young team with promise has quickly taken a bad turn. I'm confident that the Oil will be fine, but I'd be a tad more guarded if I were you. Even with some of the young kids, success not a 100% guarantee. Just saying'.

Topic TWO:
Brett Favre didn't play on Sunday. He should have retired while I still remembered him as a Hall of Famer... instead of simply being a bad photog. This past season has tainted things for me. Good Gawd... I still can't get the image of Michael Jordan in a Wizards uniform out of my mind!! Don't you think that great players should end it when they're great!

Topic THREE:
IF the stories are correct... the Green Riders will hire former Hamilton D-Coordinator Greg Marshall as their new head coach. Great call... always liked Greg when he was in Edmonton and glad that he's getting the gig! He's got intensity and I love that.

I keep hearing Calgary media tell me that there's no way the Flames deal either Kipper or Iggy before the Trade Deadline. I simply don't believe it. I can't believe it. While the Flames are on a modest little winning streak, let's face it, these guys aren't really gonna do any damage even if they do make the post season. I say trade BOTH while you can actually get something for them and start rebuilding now. Only issue? They have 11 guys with 'no movement' clauses. THAT fact alone could single handedly skuttle the ship.

Topic TWO:
When does that nifty little 'catch phrase' come out for the Oilers draft position. Last year's 'Fall for Hall' was entertaining but what about for the crop of 2011 talent? How about 'Let's Sewer for Couturier'? What about 'Let's play in a fog for Landeskog'? Work on it and get back to me.

Topic THREE:
Watched the outdoor game from Pittsburgh... yawn. Surely there's a 'best before date' on these games? Here's hoping that Calgary can inject something new into this quickly fading gimmick.
I've decided to take a different approach to this in 2011. Only if I have a major bee in my bonnet will I use the entire post for one topic. I just want to quickly post my initial thoughts and let YOU help me out with further discussion (if you want).

Topic ONE:
Women just don't get it. I'm downstairs watching the Three Stooges Marathon on AMC while wife is upstairs trying to figure out why. She doesn't understand the true art form of pie throwing or the intense comedic effects of an well timed eye poke or frying pan to the head. She just doesn't get it. Sad. But hey... I married her.

Topic TWO:
All these US College Football Bowl games? Really? Call me when the BCS Championship game is on and I'll watch with great interest. In the meantime....

Topic THREE:
Everybody has been raving about the HBO thing with the Caps and Pens. Meh- it's been OK. I guess I'm somewhat jaded since I spent four years with the Oilers, one with the Jets and have seen all that behind the scenes stuff. If you think Bruce Boudreau is a crazy man, nobody 'peeled the paint' like Ron Low. Heard some classic stuff from a great guy who simply hated it when the team didn't try hard enough.

Happy New Year!!
More to come!!Bryn Mighty Mouthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06200365705736931671noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1627239622504329492.post-20647028453979040382010-12-28T22:18:00.005-07:002010-12-28T22:25:28.236-07:002011 can not get here fast enough! The fact that I haven't posted anything to my MIGHTYMOUTH Blog Page in over five months is more statement on how unstable my 2010 was. This will be changing.

Instead of feeling like I need to write a full editorial a few times a week, I've decided to go the route that I love the most... quick random thoughts each day. When I feel like ranting, I will. When I feel like just throwing a few tidbits out there, I will.

I can NOT say that I was a huge fan of the Year 2010- just didn't like the overall direction the year went. Too many monsterous highs and far too many disappointing lows for me.

SO, 2011 will be different. Count on it.

Time to re-define and re-invent myself. Stay tuned.Bryn Mighty Mouthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06200365705736931671noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1627239622504329492.post-57482705979887792582010-07-19T11:31:00.003-06:002010-07-19T11:40:45.218-06:00Things are good....Man, I've been busy.

Can NOT believe it's been since late May when I last posted, but things have been a tad crazy.

I have a new full time gig working in the Marketing Department at Northlands at the track and casino. Very enjoyable and the staff there have been tremendous and extremely welcoming. Over the past year I've really been looking to move away from the tradition media and more into the Marketing world- so this fits beautifully. It's a chance to broaden my horizon.

The biggest thing now is bracing for the Canadian Derby. In fact, my first three days consisted of scanning about two thousand photos of the NEW Derby Girls looking for perfect pics for the website (thehorses.com). Most of them in bikinis and stuff. Tough gig right out of the gate. But I hung in there.

Coming up this weekend, I'll surround myself with the same beautiful ladies and escort them to the Hondy Indy Edmonton. Should be fun. If you see us, come and say HI.

Who knows what 'tough gig' they have planned for me after that. I eagerly await! EAGERLY.Bryn Mighty Mouthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06200365705736931671noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1627239622504329492.post-59092786199130443382010-05-23T09:03:00.006-06:002010-05-23T09:23:18.442-06:00Mascot Wars? You've got to be kidding right? An all-out mascot war is developing between Britain and Canada and I didn't even know about it.

London unveiled their new 2012 Summer Olympic mascots this week to much verbal and cyber abuse... and lot of that came from Vancouver. Here's the deal. The always sensitive, thin skinned citizens of Canada's Wet Coast took such abuse from the British tabliods during their successful Winter Olympics that now they feel it's time to 'get even'. The onslaught from the Vancouver papers and message board fanatics has been... personal and harsh. I have no issue with this... what ever floats your boat I suppose. In typical hockey style, we got slashed and we hacked right back... seems fair to me.

But perhaps we're missing the whole point here. What is the point of having a mascot anyway?

I didn't pay any attention to the lame duo called "Hidee and Howdy" in Calgary, ignored the 'things' Vancouver trotted out last year and giggled greatly at the new London 'EYE' mascots last week. But my wife just reminded me of why we have these things... they're NOT for adults... they're for KIDS. If the tiny tots love the little Calgary bears, or the things in Vancouver or the one eyed aliens in London- then it's a winner! Children will ultimately decide the success of this venture.

Oh- and let's not forget merchandising! If Jane and Michael Banks in London want a stuffed EYE for Christmas, then it's once again a winner.

Adults may hate these new mascots, but let's not forget that it simply doesn't matter if WE like them. Our votes doesn't count when it comes to mascots.

Kids rule!Bryn Mighty Mouthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06200365705736931671noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1627239622504329492.post-68302130393374747592010-05-17T15:38:00.005-06:002010-05-17T16:05:02.720-06:00Who pays for what?Sometimes the best ideas for a blog page come from the mouths of friends. Here's a gem out of a simple coffee conversation from the other day.

IF the new arena plans ever get to the stage where they'd hold a public vote for it, should only Edmonton taxpayers be allowed to vote?

No St Albert voters, forget the happy townsfolk of Sherwood Park, talk to you later Leduc, Beaumont, Spruce Grove and Stony Plain and sorry Fort Sask. If you pay property taxes in Edmonton- you're IN.

I find it quite laughable that many of my friends in these communities feel they should have a 100% say how Edmonton spends it's millions. Sorry... doesn't cut it with me. If you don't like how the Province coughs up, provided they actually do, then you speak up at the polls next election. But since the City of Edmonton is probably going to get hit with most of this cost... sorry Edmonton taxpayers only.

What if you don't pay taxes in Edmonton? Maybe you just rent? If you're an 19-year old Oiler fan and live in your parent's basement? Your opinion of how taxpayers money is spent means nothing to me. You're out too.

I want folks who're actually going to feel the financial pinch of all of this voting for or against.

Cough up? Speak up!
Otherwise? Shut up!Bryn Mighty Mouthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06200365705736931671noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1627239622504329492.post-51836310280847068382010-05-11T10:53:00.003-06:002010-05-11T11:31:22.220-06:00just got a bad feeling....Just one word: OMNIPLEX

For those much younger than 45, look it up on Google and do your homework before reading any further.

Let me say off the top- I believe Edmonton needs a new arena, plus I really see the benefit of the Entertainment Centre that is proposed to go with it. Been to LA Live and been to Westgate in Glendale- both spectacular and that sort of thing in downtown Edmonton would be wildly popular here.

Having travelled around the NHL and visited 95% of the arenas, I firmly believe the time is approaching where a new facility is going to be required here. Two reasons: the fan experience and pure economics.

No sense in bashing the 'Grand Old Dame' known as Rexall Place, but it just doesn't cut it any more in SO many ways. Sad, but very true. Add to that the NHL economics and without some sort of new facility on the horizon, the Oilers could easily leave town. Not a threat, just reality. I lived in Winnipeg and saw the same situation develop there. It's not pretty.

But it's how this whole thing is playing out that scares me. The Katz Group are tantalizing Edmontonians with various 'conceptions' of what the area 'may' look like. Nothing written in stone and no real idea of how much this will cost and who will pay for what. To me it's like wandering around a Porsche dealership, loving everything I see, but eventually for my excitement level to be sustained I need to see a sticker price. That's where I'm at right now... love it... but how much?

This all takes me back to when I was a kid in the early 70's. There was a proposed football/hockey facility called OMNIPLEX that was taken to the voters. It looked great, had sizzle, it was also planned for the downtown core, but at the end of the day it was voted down by the taxpayers.

I'm starting to get that OMNIPLEX feeling about the current situation. The Katz folks are trying to get the public to come onside (without knowing the cost) before taking this whole scheme to City Hall. I just not convinced that this tactic is gonna work. Why? It's pissing off the Councillors who'll have to vote on this thing and I fear they'll brush this off and put it to a public vote- IF they do... it's done. Simply not enough sports fans out there to offset your average skeptical taxpayer.

There has to be a better way to make this appealing to the many who don't want their taxes raised another dime. The Katz Group better figure it out fast or this project will be another OMNIPLEX.Bryn Mighty Mouthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06200365705736931671noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1627239622504329492.post-58828814837820078832010-04-23T19:17:00.004-06:002010-04-23T20:56:59.215-06:00Something is rotten in the State of ConfusionThe bloodletting in OilerLand this week has been a fascinating study in how NOT to handle things.

I will say that the hockey team is entitled to make any changes to their personel, at any time, provided they feel it will make them a stronger franchise. I'm with that. But I have a major issue with how they've executed their executions.

Kevin Prendergast, Ken Lowe, Barrie Stafford and Sparky have been Oiler employees for well over 20 years. That should count for something. In fact, Barrie Stafford is more decorated than any other Oiler... including Gretz, Mess, Lowe etc. He's won Stanley Cups, World Hockey Championships, Olympic appearances plus Gold Medal, CIAU/CIS titles etc. Anyway, all of these gentlemen deserve thanks and a gold watch on the way out the door for my money. Especially considering all the extra hours they put in after the rich guys have left for the night.

What I don't get is why the club has been so slow to release the information to the masses. The Trainer/Equipment dismissals appear to have happened a few days ago, and yet, here we are late Friday night, more than 24 hours later and the team has said DICK. Even the Prendergast dismissal was botched up and only a hurried release went out once the Journal got a sniff of the story. However, if the team is announcing a season ticket campaign, they're very quick with the releases. Are they just hoping that the paying public and media isn't paying close attention to a 30th place club? In Edmonton- ain't gonna happen.

All of these guys deserved better treatment and it saddens me to see that their departure has been so poorly handled on the PR side. For guys who've bled the Copper/Orange/Blue and Gold for over 20+ years it's extremely disappointing and almost criminal in nature.

Does nobody give a damn about long term employees any more?Bryn Mighty Mouthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06200365705736931671noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1627239622504329492.post-22088879351908626322010-04-20T13:14:00.003-06:002010-04-20T13:38:46.165-06:00Any closer to a new downtown arena?I fully expect this to drag on for about 18 months before we have any type of deal in place. There's the math, the politics, the re-zoning, the politics, the math, the grandstanding, the politics and finally, the math.

Just one request from the City Councillors? Shut the hell up until you've seen the complete deal. While I understand it's an election year and you want to make some political points, but please wait until all the facts and numbers are IN before making any public comment.

Katz Group? This ain't gonna fly unless you present EVERYTHING to the political powers that be. They MAY get more excited and positive once you go to them with all your ducks in a row.

Personally... I've been to every arena in the NHL except one, and as much as I love the old barn and it's history, the time has come to move forward, with civic enthusiasm for any project that MAY give downtown a much needed jolt. Don't care how it gets done, but it's time to send a very positive message to the rest of the country that we're forward thinking. I'm sure we can fake THAT?!Bryn Mighty Mouthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06200365705736931671noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1627239622504329492.post-7337210551465476422010-03-26T09:29:00.002-06:002010-03-26T09:41:31.616-06:00Sutter mis-stepAlthough Viking is a hour from Edmonton, and although the Sutters have always had a 'history' with the Oilers... I still love all those guys and what they stand for. Old time hockey. Take someone out back of the barn and teach em how this game is played. Love it.

BUT... after reading today's morning newspaper, I think Brent Sutter is slowly becoming unravelled as the Flames claw towards a possible playoff spot. Brent's coaching record has always been solid, but I'm not sure why he insists on challenging his players in the papers and on TV down the stretch. Shouldn't this be done behind closed doors at this delicate point of the season? Also, isn't this the time for the Captain to stand up and take control rather than have a Coach go 'deep end' on the team for all to see?

This playoff run thing (I know, seen it here in Edm a million times before) is like a roller coaster ride. Once the damn things starts, there's no getting off. Coaches simply have to ride it out with the players and let gravity take over. Not much a Coach can really say at this point that the boys haven't heard before.

But a Coach can really throw a monkey wrench into the cogs by saying the wrong thing, in the wrong place, to the wrong people. I think this is one of those times. Brent just needs to understand that players are NOT the same breed as they were back in the 80's. Coach during practices, change the lines during the games and give the media nothing but positive direction stuff in March and April.

Negative blood letting at this time of years assures you of a mid April tee time.Bryn Mighty Mouthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06200365705736931671noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1627239622504329492.post-40104474069853710512010-03-25T12:30:00.004-06:002010-03-25T12:47:22.322-06:00Ann Who?Gotta say up front... I've never even heard of Ann Coulter until this week... Nice going U of Ottawa!! Now she's on my radar screen. Never was before.

I usually tune these types of people out. But it's been tough to ignore because of all the hype. Hype NOT created by her actions, but the actions of others. These kind of 'look at me, look at me' people thrive on attention. Now she has OUR attention. Dumb.

Let me say up front, that I'm not a fan of hers or her message... BUT... I will defend her right to free speech in Canada, provided she stays on the good side of our Anti-Hate rules. That's for the Government watchdog to monitor. Not you or me. I'd feel the same way if it were Rush Limbaugh or Glenn Beck. None of these people reflect my views on anything, but I'd still fight for their right to speak up.

I always feel that the best way for someone to prove to me that they're an idiot, is to allow them to speak. It's works almost every time!!

However, the thing I fear more than people like Ann Coulter and her ilk, would be people who want to muzzle people because they don't share the same views. That's far more scary to me.

Please let ME decide whether someone's message has value. I have an open mind and I can tell what's good and what's bullshit.Bryn Mighty Mouthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06200365705736931671noreply@blogger.com0
